Pito BabySwan
When Pito, the little swan, opens his eyes one morning in October and blinks sleepily from his nest, a cold, white thing lands on the tip of his beak. He squints down at it and suddenly sneezes. Is that a dandelion seed? But then many more of the white things float down onto him out of the clouds. It must be snow! Pito is amazed. He has never seen snow before, as he hatched from his egg in May and has only known the Icelandic midnight sun since then. Excited, he scrambles out of the nest and down the slope to the pond. A layer of beautifully shimmering ice has formed on the water. Pito claps his wings enthusiastically and hops onto it with a big leap. He stands proudly on the ice for a second, but then he hears an eerie cracking sound under his feet. Before he knows it, the ice breaks and Pito plunges into the ice-cold water. The dark waves close over him, bubbling and churning. Pito flaps his legs with all his might and rows his wings to get back to the surface, but he can no longer find the hole in the ice. Suddenly, his mother's strong beak grabs him by the back of the neck and pulls him out of the water. Soaking wet and shivering, Pito sits on the shore and curses "I don't like winter! Brrrrr. It's far too cold for me!". "Well, then it's a good thing we're starting our journey south today!" says Pito's mother. Maybe they'll even meet a human child on the way who will invite Pito into their warm home and cuddle him up again.
